Restoring Sink Water Pressure

Begin by turning off the water supply under the sink.

Low water pressure can be quite annoying, especially in the kitchen where a strong flow is essential for cleaning. Often, this issue is not due to complex pipe problems but a clogged aerator in the faucet. Cleaning the aerator's screen could be the simple solution to restoring water flow.

Removing the faucet head

Begin by turning off the water supply under the sink. Place a rag over the drain to prevent small parts from falling into it. Removing the faucet head is the next step. To avoid scratching the metal, wrap the head with electrical tape, which acts as a protective barrier. Alternatively, wrapping the pliers' jaws with tape or using a piece of paper can also protect the faucet's surface. When using pliers to loosen the head, apply gentle pressure to avoid damage.

Disassembling and cleaning the aerator

Upon removing the faucet head, observe the assembly of components. The aerator typically consists of a mesh screen located under a flow restrictor, accompanied by a washer and possibly other small parts. Carefully disassemble these components. Use a toothbrush to scrub each part, with special attention to the aerator screen to remove any debris that may be causing the blockage. For a more thorough cleaning, soak the disassembled parts in vinegar for several hours to help dissolve mineral buildup and other residues. This step, while optional, can enhance the effectiveness of the cleaning process.

Reassembling and Testing

After cleaning, reassemble the parts onto the faucet head. Hand-tighten the assembly onto the faucet, then use a wrench with appropriate protective measures to ensure a secure fit. Reactivate the water supply and test the faucet to evaluate the improvement in water pressure.

If the problem persists, it may indicate more complex issues within the plumbing system, such as aging pipes or deeper clogs. A skilled plumber can diagnose and resolve issues that simple cleaning cannot, ensuring a reliable water supply in the home.
