Reasons Why the AC Is Running Constantly and Won’t Shut Off

A well-functioning air conditioning in the hot summer is a necessity. Once the indoor temperature is how you like it, the AC unit shuts down. Well, that is how it’s supposed to work, anyway. In some cases, homeowners might notice that their unit continues to run and never shuts off. Unfortunately, that’s not a good sign.

There are several reasons why this might be happening. Here are a few of the most common causes and some troubleshooting tips.

AC unit is the wrong size

It might surprise some homeowners that an AC unit that is too big or too small won’t be very efficient.

When the AC is too small, it has to work much harder to keep the home cool, meaning that it may work non-stop and still not cool the indoor space. On the other hand, if the AC unit is too big, it will not remove the moisture from the home efficiently. Aside from the unpleasant clammy air it produces, it might also run continuously.

Furthermore, the wrong duct size could be the cause of the issue too.

Dirty air filter

Unless the AC unit is regularly maintained by an HVAC expert, you might not be aware that air filters are dirty. The result of a dirty air filter is restricted airflow and much less cool air circulating in the home. Since the system is not cooling the home well, the AC might run all day.

Setting a reminder to have the air filters changed is an excellent strategy to consider.

Broken thermostat

Sometimes it’s not the AC unit but the thermostat that’s causing the problem. You might notice that the indoor temperature is optimal but that the thermostat doesn’t agree. Hence, the AC unit continues to work. If the system never shuts off, but there are no obvious issues to address, it’s time to check the thermostat.

Even though they’re typically reliable, thermostats can break down. Set the default indoor temperature to several degrees lower and higher and see if the AC will shut off. If it does, then it's time to replace the thermostat.

The AC unit is old

There are times when nothing can be done to fix an AC that won’t shut off. All HVAC systems have a lifespan.

Most AC units have a 10-15 year lifespan, even with regular maintenance, depending on the model. Often, the frequent repairs and increasing utility bills cost more than investing in an entirely new unit.

Staying cool with an efficient AC unit

How hard the AC unit will work also depends on the preferred indoor temperature and how hot it is outside. However, the age and size of the unit are critical factors, too.

Routine air filter change is paramount, as it’s the best way to avoid frequent repairs. Finally, an ancient AC that won't shut off costs too much to maintain and is overall inefficient should be replaced.
