Fall HVAC Chores
The HVAC system works hard all year round to keep our home environment comfortable. With summers coming to a close, the air conditioner has performed its job well. Now it’s time to prepare the furnace or the heating system to keep us warm during the chilly winter. Fall is the ideal time to get the HVAC inspected and maintained to ensure safety, optimal performance, and energy savings.
Here are some of the essential chores you should perform during the fall to keep the HVAC system well prepared for the changing season:
Visual inspection
Test run the system and conduct a visual inspection of the unit to look for leaks in the refrigerant lines and ducts, signs of moisture, rust, mold, unusual noises, odors, loose parts, and any electrical damage. Call an HVAC professional to conduct the required repairs if you notice any issue that needs immediate attention.
Check and replace the filters
One of the vital HVAC chores is to clean or replace the air filters. It should be changed every month when the system in heavy use. After working hard through the summer, filters accumulate pollen, dirt, dust, and other particles that clog them to obstruct airflow. A clogged filter impacts the system’s efficiency, consumes more energy, and shortens its lifespan. Rinse and clean the reusable filters, but if you are looking to replace the filter with a new one, consider getting a reusable filter.
Clean the coils
Both condenser and evaporator coils can collect dirt and dust durinsing the summer months. Clean the coils and area around them for increased airflow.
Check for leaks
Leaks allow warm air to escape the home, and the HVAC system struggles to keep the interiors cozy and warm, leading to an increase in the energy bills. Conduct an air leak check on windows, doors, and attic to ensure they don’t impact the heating. If you haven’t, insulate the attic and check the insulation around the ductwork to ensure peak performance of the furnace.
Clean the vents and ducts
Periodic dusting and cleaning of the heating ducts and furnace vents will eliminate mold, dust, and other allergens to prevent the burning smell. It also ensures that the air circulating in the home is cleaner and flowing freely. Check every room in the house to remove any clutter that might be blocking the air vents.
Clean the outdoor unit
If the condenser unit is located outside, it can suffer damage and blockage due to dust, leaves, weeds, and grime build-up. Clean the area of debris or any other object that is flammable objects. Avoid storing anything around the unit that can reduce airflow and cause a breakdown.
Thermostat
Replace the unreliable mercury thermostat with a digital one for more accuracy. They are convenient, save energy, and offer more control over the heating system.
Upgrade the unit
If the HVAC unit has aged significantly and become inefficient, fall is the right time to invest in a new one.
Professional maintenance
It is highly recommended not to wait until the last minute to call a local HVAC contractor to inspect and tune-up the furnace during the fall season. Having a qualified technician look into the system offers peace of mind to the homeowners that the HVAC unit will perform at its best through the winter.
