A Simple Guide to HVAC Motors

If an HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) motor needs replacing, selecting the proper type is crucial.

An essential component of all heating and cooling systems is the motor. If an HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) motor needs replacing, selecting the proper type is crucial. A heating or air conditioning system needs a motor to pull air in and out of the home and move air through the home’s ducts.

This article will briefly overview the five main types of motors used in heating and air conditioning systems.

HVAC motor types

Different HVAC systems have different requirements. Therefore, it’s crucial to choose a suitable motor for the job. HVAC systems use five different types of motors. They can be either factory-authorized motors or aftermarket motors. Factory-authorized motors, known as OEM, are built for a particular model. Aftermarket ones are referred to as universal motors and work with various models.

Compressor motor

A compressor motor is two motors in one. It has a run motor and a starter motor. However, these are generally the most expensive and difficult types to replace. This type of motor is typically sealed within a hermetic compressor, making access difficult. In addition, the casing is usually welded shut to ensure that the motor is free from dust or other contaminants that could interfere with it working correctly.

EMC motor

Electronically commuted motors, or EMC, are also variable speed motors. Common to air conditioning and heating systems, they help to lower energy consumption. However, unlike other HVAC motors, an EMC motor isn’t an on-or-off system. Instead, these can run at lower speeds and help to lower energy bills.

In 2019, the DOE (Department of Energy) mandated that all new construction of residential homes must include EMC motors for furnaces.

Inducer motor

Inducer motors are found in gas furnaces. They tend to be incredibly reliable and rarely need replacement. This motor assists the blower in drawing air through the combustion passage. Inducer motors are the easiest and fastest ones to replace.

Condenser fan motor

Condenser fan motors are found in outdoor air conditioning units. They can withstand the elements, are sturdy, and rarely fail. However, a condenser fan motor can require replacement.

Blower motor

Blower motors are available in single-speed and variable-speed models and are used in air conditioning and heating systems. Furthermore, it moves hot or cold air through a home’s ducts. Also, blower motors are a crucial component of an HVAC system.

Consult an HVAC professional for motor replacements

Some HVAC motors are easy to replace, while others require more advanced technical and mechanical skills. To ensure that a new motor is correctly installed, contact an HVAC professional.
